An Electrical Upsetting Machine combines resistance heating with controlled pressure to efficiently increase the size of metal bar sections in a single process. During operation, the metal piece is firmly held between special electrodes, and a strong electric current passes through it. This causes fast, targeted heating while applying axial force at the same time. The technique makes it possible to form upset sections up to 20 times bigger than the original bar, creating high-quality preforms with excellent internal structure and ideal grain flow.

GENERAL PRINCIPLE

  1. A low‑voltage, high‑current passes through a clamped section of bar between electrodes (grips/anvil), heating it via resistance (I²R).
  2. Simultaneously, a hydraulic or electromechanical ram applies axial force plasticizing the hot zone and “gathering” material into a bulge.
  3. As the bulge forms, the anvil retracts, allowing volume expansion while the rest of the bar remains cold and unworked.
  4. The result: a hot forged head with continuous grain flow, minimal scale, high dimensional control and often preforms ready for die forging.
